Mike’s passion for sport started in his youth, where he excelled at basketball. The lessons he learned on the court paved the way for Mike to practice law, where he was called to the bar in 2019, after obtaining his Civil Law (LL.L) and Juris Doctor (JD) degrees at the University of Ottawa. During his time as a law student, Mike co-founded the Sports Law Student Association marrying his commitment to excellent legal practice within the sport industry.
In the early days of his career, Mike honed his advocacy skills working for various Legal Clinics in North Bay, Sudbury, Brockville, and Ottawa. He focused on assisting low-income people by supporting their rights to housing and disability benefits, representing his clients at the Landlord and Tenant Board, the Social Benefits Tribunal and the Small Claims Court.
Following his time working in the clinic system, Mike went on to work as a personal injury lawyer in Ottawa. His work mainly represented victims of motor vehicle collisions and various other personal injury cases against the big insurance companies in Ontario. While working at TD Bank as an insurance defence counsel, Mike was able to work alongside top-level counsel, managing complex claims and contract negotiations. While appreciative of his early career opportunities, Mike’s dream was always to bring his legal acumen to the world of sport.
Mike’s commitment to supporting others included serving as a basketball coach and as a tennis instructor in Ottawa. Coaching is yet another way for Mike to give back to sport, as he believes that sport as a gateway to learning discipline, forging long-lasting relationships, and supporting excellence. Through Sport Law, Mike plans to support our clients in fostering an inclusive, respectful and legally sound culture for the benefit of everyone.
