Reflections from the Team Canada Ombudsperson

Rachel Corbett was appointed as the Commonwealth Games Team Ombudsperson in June 2010. Unlike in prior years, for these games the position was a joint appointment of AthletesCAN, Coaches of Canada and the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada. And instead of being only an athlete advocate, the Ombudsman was available to be an advocate for any team member, including coaches and mission staff. Rachel broke the mold a little bit in this role, being the first non-lawyer to ever be appointed to such a position with a Canadian team. This article is a reflection on the evolving role of the Ombudsperson, and describes Rachel's preparations for the role, using the maxim "Hope for the best - but expect the worst!".
