June 8, 2023 – (Ottawa, ON) Earlier this week, we shared the latest episode of Sportopia: Conversations about healthy, human sport, titled “Understanding grief and loss in sport”. This is the first step in a holistic approach to grief and loss being offered by Sport Law Partner, Dina Bell-Laroche.
During this episode Sport Law Partners Steve Indig and Dina Bell-Laroche host this conversation, spending 30 minutes exploring the background of grief and loss literacy and how that relates to sport, based on Dina’s studies in thanatology. During this conversation, Dina and Steve discuss how grief and loss manifest in sport and the positive impact of having loss-literate sport leaders, coaches, and athletes.
In addition, we are thrilled to announce that Dina will be officially launching her new book Grief Unleashed: Moving from the hole in our hearts to whole-hearted on June 14, 2023, in collaboration with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. Dina founded Grief Unleashed in 2021 to better support people through life losses and has brought her significant knowledge to Canadian sport, a sector she has served since 1991.
“I am so grateful to the leaders, coaches and athletes who have contributed to the knowledge I have gained on how to better companion people when life goes sideways. My new book includes real stories of athletes who have shared their lived experiences with grief and have gained additional insight and perspective through our conversations. As a bereavement educator and advocate for greater grief and loss literacy, I believe it’s essential for all of us to understand basic thanatological principles to better support those we most care about during some of life’s most difficult experiences,” shared Dina.
This holistic approach to grief and loss continues with a one-day virtual workshop in October from Dina and Grief Unleashed. The workshop creates a safe and enriching learning environment for people who want to better understand the impact of unreconciled grief, how to support self and others through life transitions, explore myths related to grief and loss, and increase their capacity to accompany people who are grieving more skillfully.
