A Guide to Employment Contracts for Coaches

Published September 15, 2003

This handbook is written for the paid coach who works part-time or full-time in a coaching position for a sport organization, club, educational institution, and/or a combination of these employers. The purpose of this handbook is three-fold: 1. to explain the critical distinction between an employee relationship and a contractor relationship; 2. to suggest some essential elements of the coaching contract; and 3. to give coaches some basic knowledge to help them negotiate a fair and effective contract with their employer. These materials were originally prepared for the Canadian Professional Coaches Association in 1999, and have been updated since that time.
