Sport Law Launches Dispute Resolution Essentials

OTTAWA, Ontario - The people who navigate conflicts and disputes in Canadian sport are called on to make tough decisions every day, while never being formally trained to do so.

Dispute Resolution Essentials is a new program from Sport Law, built specifically for the decision-makers, practitioners, and leaders who are tasked with making the decisions that impact Canadians at all levels of sport, from Olympic selection to field of play issues at the provincial, territorial and club level.

Led by co-chairs Will Russell and Angie Bellehumeur, the training is a two-day, in-person immersive program in Ottawa, Ontario, scheduled for November 21 and 22, 2026.

Enrollment in the inaugural offering of the program is limited!

Dispute Resolution Essentials is designed to respond to the growing need for structured, sport-specific education for dispute resolution and conflict management. The training program equips participants with practical tools and a working understanding of core legal principles that apply to the decisions that Canadian sport organizations must make on a regular basis - from selection appeals and membership disputes to field-of-play decisions and code of conduct concerns.

Through case studies, expert-led instruction and interactive breakout sessions, participants will leave with:

  • Confidence to manage a dispute resolution process fairly and efficiently
  • An understanding of key legal concepts that apply to the administrative decision-making process
  • Fluency in the current legal landscape of Canadian sport
  • Practical skills in decision writing and hearing management

Dispute Resolution Essentials is for sport organization leaders and decision-makers, dispute resolution practitioners, volunteers, officials, athlete representatives, legal professionals, and governance consultants working at all levels of Canadian sport.

If you have heard a selection appeal, written a disciplinary decision, or been asked to navigate a field of play conflict, this training is for you!

A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the training course.
