With athletes and coaches being forced to rethink, and possibly re-imagine their entire game plan in preparation for the Paralympic and Olympic Games, some might be experiencing anxiety, anger, and grief at the possibility of not competing. Moreover, with the cancellation of several world championships, some athletes and coaches may be feeling robbed of their final competition on the world stage. Sadly, our current North American culture is too often grief and mourning phobic, not equipped to provide a healthy and holistic approach to managing loss and reconciling grief. It is imperative for sport to better integrate grief and to understand the impact of accumulated losses as athletes transition through various stages of development. In this 1 hour webinar, one of Sport Law & Strategy Group’s Partners, Dina Bell-Laroche, discusses a critical topic that provides much needed insight into the topic of grief, loss and hope for a better way.
In this special webinar, presenters Steve Indig and computer engineer and cyber security expert Dom Chorafakis talked about the risk of privacy breaches to your organization.
The presenters examined the three most common techniques hackers use to attack organizations, provided some practical information attendees can use to avoid breaches, viruses and ransomware, and showed attendees how they can protect sensitive business information including banking information, membership data, and other private information.

Jason Robinson, an Associate with the Sport Law & Strategy Group, shared his recent industry success, discussed the framework for an effective plan, and provided event hosts with relevant tips to elevate their standard of care.
By way of background, Jason has served as an Operations Manager and Tournament Director for professional and amateur sport events, and is working with several national organizations to develop leading industry standards for event emergency planning and risk management. This experience was shared during the webinar, providing participants with a foundation for developing a formal commitment that mitigates potential event emergencies.

The webinar was presented by Steve Indig and LeeAnn Cupidio who are both lawyers with the Sport Law & Strategy Group and who have years of experience handing employment matters with sport organizations.
One of the cornerstones to a successful organization is knowing what your stakeholders want and need…and being able to deliver. You may have done this by engaging your board, staff, coaches, and parents…..but what about your athletes? Engaging athletes is one of the easiest ways to know how you are doing and how to improve. Athletes, from house league to high performance, are on the ground and eager to be heard. Organizations are starting to listen.
Join hosts Tia Wintre and LJ Bartle on this FREE webinar to learn how you can intentionally connect with this untapped resource in a meaningful way to strengthen your organization.

This one hour webinar led by Integral Master Coach(TM) Dina Bell-Laroche introduced an exciting new personality assessment tool called the NOVA Profile. The tool provides a holistic overview of one’s behavioural tendencies and highlights both our strengths and blind spots. In addition, the tool highlights one’s motivations so that you have a better understanding of what drives you and how this, in turn, shapes your choice of action. Participants learned about how the tool has been used with sport organizations to enhance their hiring practices, address conflict, strengthen teamwork and develop staff.
“The NOVA Profile is one of the most comprehensive tools I have experienced. Our entire team at CPC has been working with Dina to better support our ability to create a world leading Paralympic culture and team. We believe that the NOVA tool and accompanying support process can help us achieve it,” shared CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Karen O’Neill.
This one hour webinar provides sport leaders with insight into managing meeting challenges through helping to demystify parliamentary procedure. Sport organizations sometimes find themselves in challenging situations at their meetings due to passionate debate on a topic, questions on procedure, or simply because they are unsure how to carry out business in an efficient and compliant manner. These situations can occur at Board meetings, annual or special meetings, or within committees. The webinar will serve to provide clarity on the role of the Chair, conflict of interest, and what organizations can and can not do in meeting situations.
The webinar was presented by SLSG’s Kathy Hare and Jason Robinson. Kathy is a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP) and Jason is a Certified Parliamentarian with the American Institute of the Parliamentarians (AIP). Both Kathy and Jason have chaired and supported a variety of meetings and helped sport organizations navigate the associated hurdles of parliamentary procedure.
Please note: the last question on the webinar was misunderstood and an incorrect answer was provided. The question was ‘If you have someone who is on two Boards (i.e. at a local and provincial level) can they be asked to be excused from a meeting for discussion to take place?’
The correct answer to the question is that in cases where there is a conflict of interest, the member in conflict should remove themselves from any discussion or voting on the motion before the members. As an example, if there is a motion before the Board to raise the membership fees for the organization’s members and a Board member is also on the board of a member organization, they are in conflict and should remove themselves from the discussion and voting. If the conflicted member does not declare a conflict and remove themselves, another Board member can raise the question of conflict of interest with the Chair who could then make the ruling and ask the conflicted member to leave the discussion and voting.
Sport organizations can struggle not only with acquiring new sponsors– but also with maintaining and prioritizing existing partnerships. After the high fives have been exchanged and commitments have been made, what comes next and how do you manage it all? Executing a new partnership, activating the sponsorship properties, maintaining productive communication, and planning for the future are all critical steps in ensuring your success and reputation as a desirable partner.
This hour-long webinar looked at the impact of sponsor acquisition on sport organizations and how you can effectively manage your new and existing partnerships. The webinar focused on three key streams:
1. Increasing your sponsorship building capacity
2. Ensuring that you deliver on your sponsorship promises
3. Maintaining existing partnerships during busy or difficult times
The webinar was hosted by Jason Robinson, a sponsorship specialist for the Sport Law & Strategy Group and an active Partnership Consultant for several sport organizations. Jason shared strategies and tips for managing sponsors post-acquisition and how to integrate this partnership maintenance into your daily planning.
To assist provincial sport organizations (PSOs) in applying industry leading risk management principles, Dina Bell-Laroche, the lead facilitator for the national Risk Management Project, was joined by LeeAnn Cupidio and Jason Robinson to share what they have learned about the value of managing risks more proactively.
Participants on this webinar learned some of the key risk management concepts as well as participated in a live risk management process. With risk management becoming one of the key indicators of good business practice, sport leaders learned more about how it can be useful to their staff, Board, volunteers, coaches and athletes, and how it can elevate the standard of care within their sport.
This one hour webinar provides sport leaders with insight into proactively planning for worst case scenarios. It involves preparing for high level risks involving safety issues, abuse and harassment, financial management, reputational concerns, hosting of events, and so much more. It is critical to have an effective risk management policy that clearly maps out the risk tolerance, the steps required to manage the crisis, and the communications protocols clearly understood by the Board and Staff. In addition, organizations need to have media savvy spokespeople who are comfortable under the spotlight.
The webinar was presented by Mary Dwyer, the Executive Director of Ontario Artistic Swimming, and Dina Bell-Laroche, Partner, Sport Law & Strategy Group, and provided an insider’s look into how an organization managed through the horrific loss of one of their athletes during the Danforth shooting in August 2018.
Since January 1st, 2018 several laws and legislation in Ontario have been or will be amended and Ontario-based sport organizations are directly impacted by the changes. In this webinar, lawyer Steve Indig discussed the applicable changes specifically relating to workplace harassment, employment, corporate compliance, Rowan’s law (concussion management), and the legalization of marijuana.
Steve provided information that will update sport organizations on the impact of the current and upcoming amendments and the steps that Ontario organizations can take to comply with the new laws.
This 1hr. Webinar will interest any sport organization who wants to ensure a safe sport environment for its athletes and stakeholders. The question is where to begin? This webinar provides an update about safe sport across the country and provides best practices and tips on how you can begin creating your safe sport implementation strategy within your organization and more.
The webinar was presented by Steven Indig, Managing Partner and lead legal counsel for SLSG and LJ Bartle and Tia Wintre who bring expertise in quality assurance, risk management and system implementation. Together they are moving safe sport into action!
Sport organizations must have the proper policies in place to ensure a Safe Sport environment for all participants. In this timely webinar, lawyer Steve Indig discussed how to improve your code of conduct, discipline and complaints policies, and screening procedures to increase protections for athletes, coaches, and volunteers.
Steve also reviewed whistleblower policies, the ombudsman concept for sport, how activating your policies and educating your stakeholders can reduce harassment in all areas of your organization, and more.

Leading from the Basement – Taking care of yourself and your team during COVID-19
With very little notice, COVID-19 has forced sport leaders from the executive office to their kitchen tables. Many are struggling to cope with this new reality. As leaders, we have had to learn new skills to work remotely, while trying to stay connected with teams through digital platforms, managing children and their new ‘at home’ learning routines, and struggling to deal with the grief that is setting in for athletes and coaches whose Paralympic and Olympic dreams have been postponed. People cope differently and it’s important to know what the needs are and those you care about. Join Integral CoachesTM Lauren Brett and Dina Bell-Laroche for an uplifting webinar on healthy and healing ways to survive and thrive during this time of uncertainty.
We’ll talk about:
- Strategies and pitfalls on working remotely
- How to maintain momentum despite not being together
- Understanding different coping styles
- Self-care tips to nourish your body, mind, and soul
In this webinar, presenter Dina Bell-Laroche discussed effective crisis management techniques that will have make you more confident in your approach to dealing with crisis and conflict. Dina is a seasoned sport consultant who has helped clients manage crisis and conflict at over a dozen international Games and closer to home, and has helped clients defend their reputation when a scandal hits.
Effective crisis management requires proactivity, intelligence and skillfulness. Managing crisis in a way that has your stakeholders rallying behind you requires courage, compassion and presence. Dina talked about who needs to know what during a crisis, by when, how and why.
The hour-long webinar discussed the risks of texting and connecting with your colleagues on social media. Kevin Lawrie explained what happens when we communicate by text and social media and how we lack the regular communication cues that exist in face-to-face conversations. If you’ve ever noticed that you are far more personal when you text a work colleague (or a fellow volunteer or Board member) versus when you email that same person, this webinar will help you understand what’s going on and why – and how to avoid saying something that might get you in trouble.
Topic areas also included the risks and challenges of this type of communication, our roles and the authority dynamic, what it means to communicate “hyperpersonally”, and problems with ‘oversharing’.
The webinar discussed risks related to international travel and explored best practices. Existing approaches to mitigating travel risks have indicated that more can be done to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes, coaches and mission staff when travelling abroad.
Dina Bell-Laroche and Jason Robinson shared their industry learnings and risk management expertise as it relates to international team travel. Recent events, such as the early return of Canada Soccer’s Women’s U-17 National Team and officials from Nicaragua due to heightened civil unrest, reflect an increase in the number of incidents involving Canadian teams travelling outside of Canada for events and training camps.

This is a skill that any leader can learn. You will walk away from this learning experience enriched and inspired to a new way in holding conversations, hosting meetings, and coaching athletes.

The four members of the iS4 team (Christine Sinclair, Diana Matheson, Rhian Wilkinson and Karina LeBlanc) spoke on video with Dina Bell-Laroche about the lessons they learned during both their darkest moments and their unparalled back-to-back bronze medal wins at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. “We feel strongly that Canadian leaders need to hear not only about our high points but also the hardships we encountered along the way; the lessons that taught us to be more resilient and adaptable,” shared Sinclair. “It’s a message that I and iS4 believe can be useful to everyone from CEOs, High Performance Directors, Coaches, other athletes, and all Canadians striving for more from themselves.”
