Bruce Deacon, M.Ed, joined Sport Law as Team Member in 2021, adding his significant experience and expertise in high-performance sport, program development, management, and evaluation to the expanding growth of the organization. He is passionate about the transformative power of sport while ensuring that sport organizations have the structures and strategies needed to achieve their mission. As a retired two-time Olympian in marathon, Bruce has served as a catalyst for positive social change supported by the business acumen required to translate ideals into inspired action. He has twice won the Coaching Association of Canada’s Coaching Excellence Award.
Bruce brings decades of leadership experience from his work within the BC Provincial Government in the areas of policy, program and project management, and negotiations. He had led high-profile government initiatives in the education, shared services, and justice sectors including managing complex programs, leading multi-party negotiations, and developing holistic strategic plans, processes, and initiatives.
His leadership in sport includes managing the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Western Office in the three-year lead-up to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games; serving as a valued board member with Athletics Canada Board, BC Athletes Voice (Chair), BC Athletics, and Olympians Canada (Vice President); and was the General Manager for the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Cup, the Western Hemisphere’s cross country running championships.
Bruce is the father of two sons and lives in Victoria, BC. He enjoys hiking, running, canoeing, and being outside with Murphy, his beloved labradoodle.
